Following a march-like introduction, a series of elegant and graceful waltzes unfolds one after another. It is a famous piece that is often performed at the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra’s annual New Year’s Concert.

This is an interlude performed by orchestra alone, placed just before the final act of Richard Strauss’s last opera, *Capriccio*. It features the exceptionally graceful melodies and harmonic progressions characteristic of Strauss.

It is arranged for double choir, with the roles of the chorus and orchestra alternating between the first and second halves.
